Thus says Yahuah: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Yahudah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance on them, therefore thus says Yahuah: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate.

CURRENT PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE
Edom's judgment is explicitly connected to its revenge against Yisrael. The oppression of the covenant people — the slave trade, colonization, systemic suppression — is the revenge of Edom against his brother Yaacob. Yahuah will repay that revenge with desolation.
